assistance dogs of america, inc.

This year, Chicks for Charity has selected Assistance Dogs of America, Inc. (ADAI) to be its 2008 beneficiary. The organization began in 1984, under the name “Guide Dogs for the Handicapped,” by Pamela “Sam” Maxwell who trained her dog, Abbey, for her husband, Joe, who was a quadriplegic. As word began to spread on the benefits talented, skilled dogs can provide, the Maxwell’s received requests from others for trained dogs.

In 1989, the name of the organization was changed to Assistance Dogs of America, Inc. and the training headquarters moved to two and a half acres of land in Swanton, Ohio. The property includes office facilities and living quarters to accommodate live-in staff, a training building and insulated, heated kennels with 20 indoor-outdoor runs.

For over 20 years, ADAI has helped disabled individuals become more independent by pairing them with highly trained dogs. ADAI service dogs have helped transform the lives of over 150 individuals by providing their owners with self-reliance, greater self-confidence, self-esteem and most importantly, a chance to live their lives to their fullest potential.
